April 9. The Double as Difference and Desire. Symposium/Release/Reading-Screening

The Double as Difference and Desire is a full day program, produced in collaboration between Anders Paulin and Weld in connection to the release of the publication Twin Figure of Mimesis.

We will start at 14.00 with a symposium discussing the notion of The Double. In a series of conversation format, we try to address some questions together: What is that we do when we make an image (visual, sonic, physical, mental, linguistic) of the world? How can we approach the art object as an autonomous thing; not a mere copy of the world, but an object existing on its own conditions? Is there agency without subject/object relations? And what language and strategies of mediation would be relevant in this context?

This is followed by a release of the book in the frame of a dinner.

After this we would like to invite to a participatory reading/screening session where we make a doubling journey through the novel The Melancholy of Resistanceby László Krasznahorkai and Bela Tarr’s filmatization Werckmeister Harmonies. The participation of reading and listening is equally important, so please feel welcome to join in any way you prefer. (However, in order for us to have anything to listen to, we will need 4-5 people to sign up for the reading.)

In the publication Twin Figure of Mimesis Anders Paulin makes a scripted journey through the landscape of performative mimetics. Written as a double bill, where the collection of essays meets a scripted version of a performative work, the book aims to discuss and problematize a platonic paradigm in performing arts, organising the world in truth and false, original and copy. Opposed to this, the texts address various alternative concepts of mimesis.

The essays are written in dialogue with, and responded by, Goran Sergej Pristaš, Bojana Cvejić, Benjamin Noys and Peggy Phelan. Preface by Austin Gross.

It is optional to come for either the afternoon or the evening part, and we’re of course very happy if you join for the full day

Welcome!

PROGRAM

14.00-17.00 Symposium
The conversations depart from two questions:
1) What Thing Is The Art Object In The World?
2) How Do We Speak With This Object?

14.00-15.00: Panel discussion
Cecilia Sjöholm (professor of aesthetics, Södertörn University), Josefine Wikström (assistant professor of dance theory, Uniarts Sthlm), Anders Paulin (dramaturg and director), Austin Gross (PhD candidate in philosophy, Kingston), Jon Refsdal Moe (professor of dramaturgy, Uniarts Sthlm)

15.00-16.00: Group conversations
All participants divided in six group conversations. Each conversation moderated by one person from the panel.

16.00-17.00: Reconnection
We gather again and present the key concepts from respective conversation.

17.00-18.00 Collective Cooking
Here we’ll need 4-5 people to sign up for the cooking the dinner. We keep it simple (shopping & chopping will be prepared in advance).

18.00-19.00 Dinner/Release
Conversation around some notions actualized in the book, moderated by Austin Gross

19.00-21.30 Melancholic Harmonies– Reading/Screening/Concert (145 min)
Taking turns we collectively read Krasznahorkai’s novel The Melancholy of Resistanceas far as we get during the 145 min duration of Bela Tarr’s film Werckmeister Harmonies.

The movie is screened in a silent version. We start the film and the reading together, and let them mix and reflect each other in the layered differences and similarities that occur as the double medializations of the narrative drift in and out of synch with each other.

The reading/screening is accompanied with the triple layer of a drone session by Leif Elggren.
