Nov 18. Open talk: Which ritual?
We want to know more about the meaning of ritual in art and invite you to an open conversation ”Which ritual?”. Participating guests are artists Madeleine Hatz, Roberto N Peyre and Nadine Byrne, dancer and choreographer Siriol Joyner and Lama Chimey.
We want to reflect together on the importance of ritual in our society as well as in the arts. Starting from different artistic practices, we will explore how art is linked to ritual, both in the expression of the work and in the making.
Ritual is a movement from one state to another. Whether the ritual is done for oneself or in a larger group, it measures out time or space for different transformations. It is a form of action that is repeated according to definite patterns.
For a long time, society at large has moved away from ideas about ritual. However, reflections on spiritual dimensions and various acts of ritual nature, have been an intimate and central part of many artistic practices. How is ritual in art related to other forms of ritual (religious, spiritual, public)? Has the absence of ritual in our society created a vacuum? Is ritual making its way back into our lives? Has it ever been absent?
During the evening there will be short presentations accompanied by artistic events. We will also break into smaller groups for a more intensive discussion. These open conversations at Weld aim to create space and opportunities for encounters that generate exchanges between artists and those interested in a public dialogue on a specific topic.
The evening is curated by Anna Koch and Nina Øverli

Madeleine Hatz
Madeleine Hatz is deeply involved in political and philosophical issues. In her work there is an interplay between the artistic and the activist. Hatz’s artistic activism includes abstract painting combined with performance works. Her work suggests the invisible relationships between the secular and the spiritual; for her they are the same practical reality. It is the active doing that characterizes a conscious life.
Roberto N Peyre
Roberto N Peyre’s installations and performances are staged as specific interventions that create an experience of being captured, possessed or embraced. They are often poetic allusions to some indefinable sacred or unknown ritual. His works include minute recordings, carefully arranged objects, dresses, scents, processions or social interactions, which we are drawn to become part of, as if by chance or by intuition.
Siriol Joyner
Siriol Joyner works in dance, choreography and visual arts. Her choreographic practice explores the relationship between thought and movement as well as dance and sculpture. Working outdoors, in nature, is an important part of her work. Siriol is undertaking long-term choreographic research with Irish choreographer Ruairi Donovan under the name ’CELTIC RADICAL’ exploring cultural identity, language and place in both Wales and Ireland.
Nadine Byrne
Nadine Byrne’s artistic practice spans mediums including sound, film, sculpture, text and performance. Her work explores the abstract aspects of human existence such as transcendence, loss, memory, dream and ritual. Her work is often based on a need to conceptualise events from her own life and a fascination with visual and social manifestations of alternative constructions of reality.
Lama Chimey
Lama Chimey is a Buddhist priest, certified wedding officiant, and Dharma and meditation teacher in the Tibetan tradition. She is also the founder of Triyana Meditation™ and its instructor program. Teaching and guiding others has been a common thread throughout her life, whether the topic has been dharma, dance, theater, yoga, meditation or wellness. Music and writing are also an important part of her life. She holds an MA in performing arts.
