Nov 19. Disorientating and Queering Le Bal Moderne – Edition 1: Dinis Machado

Weld invites everyone to dance, because we all can! No matter our age experience or physical ability. In this series of social dances contemporary choreographers are being commissioned to make universally accessible dances, that will share the depth and profundity of their work in inclusive and enjoyable formats for all to participate in. Le Bal Moderne has been a hugely successful format instigated in 1993 by Michel Reilhac.

This special series of Le Bal Moderne, dances for all, is centred around celebrating Sweden’s pluralistic cosmopolitan society within a frame of disorientating, queering and decolonising. A space open to all, of all backgrounds and all orientations. In this special edition each evening features a different commissioned choreographer who will be sharing some nuances and details of their artistic practice, giving all a chance to experience the choreography from the inside in a social, friendly and welcoming context. It provides a much needed opportunity for people to mingle and move together without being judged or feeling self-conscious.

Choreographer Dinis Machado kicks off this special series of events. For this first iteration Dinis Machado will share with the participants a social dance incorporating practices from their work through an open score resolved with the people in the room. Machado’s work unfolds from the materialisation of bodies we desire, fantasise and imagine and the playful experimenting of the dances they dance.

Often it is those who imagined themselves to have two left feet that are the most surprised by their own talent.
