Weld is visited by a group of art students from the Royal University College of Fine Arts and hosts an exhibition of their work inspired by the Carnival – both as a place and cultural phenomenon. Visitors to the exhibition are met by a cacophony of East German cowboys, a fortune-telling kitten, contemporary pole dancing, a play on perceptions, doomsday thoughts, a dwarf and rollercoaster, Norbert Witte’s exploits, and a study of gravitation – all in a glorious mix …
4 Days of Escapism is more than just an exhibition, it’s a performance in constant movement where the visitors’ focus is moved from one attraction to another.
See Weld’s website for a programme of upcoming films.
Heterotopia and just for fun
A carnival is a place where many visual cultures coexist – folksiness, sensationalism, outsider aspects, and more. The Carnival – its tradition, history and influence on art, was the unifying concept in a year-long academic course at the Royal University College of Fine Arts in Stockholm. Participating students explored the concept of Carnival through education, films, lectures, tutorials, self-study and work. Participating students are now exhibiting their own work as a part of the course at Weld in Stockholm, May 14-17.
