Mar 25–28. Necessity of Space Festival
Necessity of Space is a festival that raises awareness for the space of art and celebrates Weld’s 20th anniversary. An intense four-day festival and a book launch. The festival offers dance and choreography, music, art, performance and poetry. New performers and a number of significant artists from Weld’s past will participate.
These are critical times for the existence of experimental and exploratory activities. Funding is being reallocated or withdrawn and rents are rising. Places that enable both immersion and development in various art forms are under threat. These are places where people dare to take risks, explore traditions and pave the way for new directions – where new artistic expressions and ways of engaging with an audience are developed. These arenas, often artist-run, form an important foundation that nourishes and inspires innovation in larger institutions.
Weld, founded and run by dancer and choreographer Anna Koch since 2006, is one such space. A space for artistic renewal in dance, the development of interdisciplinary art forms and public presentations. Hundreds of artists of different generations and nationalities work and have worked through Weld. Thousands of visitors have enjoyed Weld’s art, both nationally and internationally.
During the festival, The Necessity of Space – Weld 20 Years, a photo book and archive, will be released. Twenty artists have been invited to write texts on the theme of The Necessity of Space. The texts revolve around the place where art manifests itself, works, emerges and is realised, but also around the inner space required to be able to listen to processes. Many of the contributions are based on Weld. In addition, a group of established poets have been invited to write poems on the theme of The Importance of Space in a more metaphysical sense. The poets will read these poems live during the festival and they will be published as inserts in the book. Read more about the book below!
