The Liminal is a choreographic triptych, where three solos—three universes—exist side by side. Each solo is its own world, carrying its own unique language and rhythm, shaped by a diversity of methods, references, and bodily practices. Together, they form a whole that never fully becomes one, yet never loses their distinguishing forms, embodied by three distinctly different dancers. Like the work itself, they exist in limbo, moving through a vacuum in the hope of becoming one.

The Liminal draws particular inspiration from the figures of Irish painter Francis Bacon and how they function within his triptychs. Just as Bacon’s triptychs are composed of entirely separate sections that prevent a narrative from forming, The Liminal brings together three personalities, three destinies, three inner imaginative forces, and three lightscapes—without a story ever taking shape. They are separate universes, figures that do not narrate, but rather reflect themselves in one another, moving in and out of various liminal spaces. They meet—or do not meet—on stage. They are alienated from one another, from their surroundings, from themselves. They exist on the threshold, in the space in-between.

Liminality:
Liminality refers to a state of transition, ambiguity, or in-betweenness. It is a space where one is suspended—unable to return to what was, or step fully into what is coming. The word “liminal” comes from the Latin for threshold or border—a space between states. It might be experienced in the fleeting moment between sleep and wakefulness, or between life and death.

CARIMA NEUSSER
is a choreographer and performer working at the intersection of contemporary dance and performance. Her work is often interdisciplinary, created in collaboration with artists from the fields of visual art, music, architecture, and other disciplines. Her performances explore metaphysical questions and activate the audience’s inner world through visually rich environments where dance, light, and visual art meet. She views choreography as a pathway into our inner spaces—places where imagination, emotions, dreams, and memories reside. Through choreography, she creates openings that allow the inner life to emerge, offering the audience a chance to reflect themselves in what unfolds on stage. Neusser’s work has been presented at venues and institutions such as Dansens Hus and Weld in Stockholm, as well as internationally in countries including Norway, Finland, Morocco, Brazil, Germany, Portugal, Mexico, Haiti, Tunisia, and Egypt. In 2022, her piece Ghetto Gucci was featured at the prestigious art exhibition documenta fifteen in Kassel, in collaboration with artists and dancers from Haiti. Alongside her artistic practice, she curates the project Gnistrande Samtal and is a co-founder of Tomorrow’s Art Audience. She also participates in the interdisciplinary art project Governing Bodies. She holds an MA in Culture and Media Production from Linköping University (2014–2016) and studied dance at the Iwanson International School of Contemporary Dance in Munich (2006–2009).

AILISH MAHER
is an Irish-Finnish dance artist based in Vaasa, Finland. Her practice spans live performance, screendance, and writing. She has performed in works by choreographers and artists such as Liz Roche Company, Malviniemi Company, Lucia Kickham, Raimund Hoghe, Nathan Johnston, Janne Aspvik, Carina Ahlskog, Carima Neusser, Flora Fauna Project, among others.

LISA SCHÅMAN
Curious about practices that intertwine art theory and dance, and with a deep interest in artistic process and methodology—as well as the dance work itself from the perspectives of dancer, choreographer, and audience—Lisa Schåman approaches a wide range of projects as a performer. Based in Stockholm, Lisa has worked with choreographer Malin Elgán on the project Delar, with performances at Ställbergs Gruva, Hägerstensåsens Medborgarhus, Hallen in Farsta (2023), and at Moderna Dansteatern (Med till hälften – en halv provokation, MDT, 2024). She is currently involved in the creation of choreographer Peter Mill’s upcoming baby performance O (premiere and Riksteatern tour, spring 2025), as well as Oda Brekke’s work dead dead document at MDT. Lisa is also engaged in the artist-run studio Höjden in Östberga—a space for artistic work, process, and production, and a platform for solidarity and exchange among artists. She holds a BA in Dance from Stockholm University of the Arts (2015).
