May 3. Spatial Mnemonics. An evening with Lundahl & Seitl and guests

SPATIAL MNEMONICS is a curated evening that presents extracts from Eternal Return (2019), a mixed reality installation by Lundahl & Seitl and ScanLAB Projects. The work has a parallel existence in the form of a book, a speculative fiction written by Malin Zimm.

A set of choreographed events during the evening guides the audience through the premises of Weld and unfolds parts of the artwork through VR, performance, and reading. The night ends with a panel talk with the artists and their collaborators, moderated by curator Sara Rossling.

SPATIAL MNEMONICS explores our perception of the intersection between actual and virtual situations. The term refers to mental methods based on spatiality that enhances human memory. Through visualisation of familiar rooms; by mentally placing items in imagined, familiar places, one increases the ability to arrange and recollect memories. The concept is utilised curatorially where items from the artwork will recur in different spatial situations throughout the evening.

Eternal Return (2019) is co-produced by STRP and supported by Konstnärsnämnden, Stockholm Stad och Kulturrådet. At Weld, this is the first occasion where the idea and format are introduced to a Swedish audience. In 2009 Weld, a place for processes and events in dance and art, co-produced Symphony of a Missing Room by Lundahl & Seitl.

“I’ve experienced VR before, but because you have the sense of touch and are being touched […] the touch created a certain connection and awareness of my physical being. The moments of physical contact were a reminder of my own body.” (Visitor of Eternal Return at STRP)

Programme

6.00 pm: Doors open at Weld, Norrtullsgatan 7 (Odenplan)
6.15 pm: Welcome speech
6.30 pm: Presentation of Eternal Return (2019)
7.00 pm: Panel talk
8 – 9 pm: Chat with the artists

The panel consists of Lundahl & Seitl, Max Čelar, Designer and Digital Artist from ScanLAB Projects, Malin Zimm, Architect PhD, Björn Norberg, Curator, and New Media Expert and Anna Koch, Artistic Leader of Weld. The discussion takes a point of departure in Lundahl & Seitl’s interdisciplinary practice, bringing focus to spatiality, choreography, memory, science and technology. Against the background of the collaboration behind Eternal Return (2019) created by Lundahl & Seitl and ScanLAB Projects together with Malin Zimm, the panel participants intend to reflect: what can we find out about ourselves in mixed reality art experiences, and what’s the future of multidisciplinary art collaborations?

After the talk, there will be an opportunity for the audience to ask questions, chat with the artists, and for those interested, experience an extract from Eternal Return (2019).
