Shoes Off 12+13/12 2008.
The festival Shoes Off at Weld in Stockholm is focusing on interdisciplinary meetings when dancers and choreographers collaborate with practitioners from photography, graphic design and science. The purpose of the festival is to present new premieres by Welds residency choreographers, but also as an opportunity to summarize the year.
Participants: Kajsa Sandström (SE) and David Bergé (BE/DE), Andreas Karperyd (SE) and Staffan Eek (SE), Ingrid Cogne (FR) and Julien Ochala (FR), Maija Hirvanen (FI), Jelena Rundqvist (SE), Marie Fahlin (SE) Swans on speed (SE) + DJ OMG and guests.
Kajsa Sandström (SE) and David Bergé (BE/DE) ”I need a witness to perform”
Kajsa Sandström is educated at PARTS (2000-2004) and has worked as dancer among others for Mette Ingvartsen and with Kubilai Khan Investigations (FR). She has with her solo at Shoes Off, as a residency choreographer at Weld Lab, her first premiere in Stockholm. In “I need a witness to perform”, Sandström explores what it means to perform for different spectators. In front of her laptop camera she has investigated a dancer´s movement in the daily environments. Seen through the camera this became a strategy to peal off hidden structures of behaviour and make the inherent choreography of spaces visible. In the performance she combines the different films with movement, in front of a live audience. The performance is developed in collaboration with photographer David Bergé (BE/DE). David has previously worked together with several international choreographers and artists and as a photographer for ImPulsTanz in Vienna. In this project Sandström and Bergé are trying to extend the photographic moment and to use the photographic frame as a witness to the performative process rather than to document it.
Andreas Karperyd (SE) and Staffan Eek (SE) “Typography Now”
Andreas Karperyd has since 1987 worked with graphic form. He is one of the founders and the designer of MERGE magazine, he also produces music. Staffan Eek is choreographer and dancer and has worked with several choreographers from Sweden and abroad. Recently together with Christina Caprioli, internationally with Christel Johannessen/zero visibility, Christine de Smedt and Les Ballets C. de la B. among others. As a choreographer, he has created a number of works that have been presented both in Sweden and internationally. During the spring and autumn 2008, Andreas Karperyd and Staffan Eek have had a residency at Weld. Together they have researched how typographical expressions and work methods could be used in movement, and how movement can create typography. The result is shown in the project “Typography now” during Shoes off. Parallel with the work at Welds studio Karperyd has made notes about the project at www.karperyd.com/blog/
Ingrid Cogne (FR) "Research" and “Poudré(e) la suite”
Ingrid Cogne, choreographic artist based in Stockholm, makes artistic proposals in the dance field related to artistic, political and social contexts where she finds herself in. Interested by the notion of process, she questions, problematizes its relation to the audience. In her artistic process, Ingrid is studying the concept of meeting under various aspects. In the project ”Research”, Cogne is working together with Julien Ochala, scientist in Neurophysiology at the University of Uppsala. His main interest is the understanding of the mechanisms responsible for Myopathies (immobility, muscle diseases). The proposal “Research” is Ochalas first appearance as a performer. “Research” aims at giving an eye on the use of the term research to describe an activity. “Research” is the testimony of the meeting between two disciplines through the meeting between two individuals who move in different worlds. With the placement of Julien in an artistic context, Ingrid also proposes her eyes on the meeting between Dance, Movement and Choreography.
In “Poudré(e) la suite”, Ingrid Cogne pursues her research on the meeting between an audience and a work of art. Last June, Cogne proposed “poudré(e)s 11” at Weld. She proposed to an audience composed of 11 persons, to become elements of her choreography. In “poudré(e) la suite”, she questions the position of the spectator in the context of meeting with a work of choreography. The questions are: Who is performing? Can we talk about spect-actor?
Additional program: Video by artist Jelena Rundkvist, a “work in progress” by Maija Hirvanen from Welds Nordic residency and a special version of the choreography “Black Swans” by Welds Artistic director Anna Koch.
